Mgambo went down 2-1 to Yanga in the left over fixture at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.
Mgambo are currently positioned 14th in the league’s standing with 23 points from 27 games and the Tanga team certainly needs to win all of its remaining matches to stand a chance of maintaining premiership status.
Lazaro said victory over Yanga was the only result that his squad needed to ensure it takes part in the next season’s top flight league.
“We are currently struggling to see to it that we remain in the premier league, therefore both a defeat and a draw were bound to frustrate our efforts,”
After having managed to notch an early goal, Mgambo played their hearts out and managed to thwart several attacks launched by Yanga in the first half, only to concede an equaliser a few minutes before the breather.
Yanga coach Hans van Pluijm, expressed delight in his team’s victory but insisted the team needs to fully exploit numerous scoring opportunities that come its way.
“I counted six to eight chances. We wasted so many chances today, that’s why we have to change,”
He, moreover, said he was less impressed with his team’s showing in the early stages of the first half, noting that failure to execute a good build up saw the squad concede the early goal.
Pluijm opted to rest his team’s reliable goal scorer, Zimbabwean Donald Ngoma, in the first half but he then introduced him in the second half to replace Paul Nonga.
Ngoma’s presence breathed fresh zeal into the Jangwani Street side’s striking force, as he managed to torment Mgambo’s defence throughout the half.
Mgambo have a tough assignment against Mtibwa Sugar of Morogoro at the latter’s venue on May 7.
A win for the Tanga team will see it leapfrog Coast Region’s JKT Ruvu and Kagera Sugar to occupy the 12th position in the league’s standings, but the positioning will largely depend on results from the day’s other matches.
Yanga will have opportunity to tighten their grip on the top position when they play Toto African at the latter’s venue, CCM Kirumba, in Mwanza on Saturday.
