Thugs armed with traditional weapons such as machetes, clubs, knives, iron bars and even fire arms are now targeting people at their homes or business premises, causing serious injuries to the victims before making away with belongings they hope will sustain their livelihoods.
In a recent reported case, thugs armed with machetes and knives attacked a veteran journalist, Allan Lawa, an employee with Mwananchi Communications Limited, at his homeplace located at Kimara Bonyokwa in Ubungo district, causing life threatening injuries on his body.
Reports say the bandits demanded money in US dollars they believed he had received from a trip best known to themselves .The story had a sad ending as Lawa was seriously injured before he was taken to Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute ( MOI) for treatment.
People engaging in medium and small-scale businesses have also been falling victim to such vicious attacks. Lurking in the shadows until closing time, the thugs would invade their targeted business premises or stalls, hoping to get away with the sales of the day.
Car parks are not spared either as we have heard cases of thugs storming such premises, making away with vehicles or their parts. As thugs engage in such evil deeds some innocent people lose life and many others sustain life threatening injuries.
Those with fresh memory may recall how former President Jakaya Kikwete tackled armed robbery immediately after assuming presidency in 2006. As the third phase government was winding up business armed robbers were also terrorising banks, petrol stations, bureau de change and other large -scale business premises.
When President Kikwete came to power he vowed to crush the network of armed robbers. He immediately appointed Said Mwema as Inspector General of Police (IGP) who, by and large, successfully dealt with the menace.
As the fifth phase government continues to tighten liquidity in the local economy a wave of thugs has emerged, crafting new strategies to get easy money by invading homes or business premises or stalls, raising fear among the public.
Observation shows people living in areas located in the outskirts of the city where police patrol or surveillance is not conducted are the most vulnerable to these vicious attacks.
In developed nations security is always number one priority to its citizens that is why it may take just a few minutes or hours before a criminal is apprehended after committing crime.
The same should be adopted here at home. Observation shows that the government takes so long to decide whether or not to establish a police station or post in a particular residential area even if it would be proved beyond reasonable doubt that such locality has enough population to demand police station or post.
As a nation we should now come up with an affirmative action to ensure security at our homes and business premises is guaranteed.
