Women premier cricket bowls off in Tanga

SIX teams are lined up for this year’s Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) regional women club tournament scheduled to start in Tanga tomorrow.

TCA senior development officer, Hamisi Abdallah, said the event which will end next Thursday, will be used by the association to select players for the senior national women cricket team that will take part in the ICC Africa Women’s World Cup qualifiers scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe next month.

Abdallah mentioned teams that will participate in Tanga tournament and their respective regions in brackets as Morogoro Stars, Uluguru Girls (Morogoro), Kilimeru Girls (Arusha), Dar es Salaam Combine (Dar es Salaam), Mwanza Girls (Mwanza) and hosts Tanga Development.

“It will be the first time for Tanga to host the tournament and the participating teams will play Twenty20 and 50-over games,” Abdallah said.

The regional women tournament is among several domestic events organised annually by the national cricket governing body as it targets to improve standard of the sport at domestic level.

Morogoro outfits have, for the past few years, been dominating the tournament, thanks to the teams’ diligence and strong quest to excel at the competitive level of the sport.

The region’s outfits have, in turn, been contributing a huge number of players in senior and junior national women cricket teams.
