TANZANIA soccer giants, Yanga, are expected to play Angola’s Sagrada Esperanca in a playoff to decide teams that will take part in the groups’ stage of the CAF Confederation Cup early next month.

The playoffs fixture, issued by CAF’s headquarters based in Cairo yesterday, discloses that Yanga will face the Angolan outfit in the first leg at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on the weekend of May 6-8.
Yanga will then travel to Luanda to take on their opponents on the weekend of May 17-18.

The winners of the 1/8th round of the Orange CAF Confederation Cup (CC) have been pitted against the losing clubs of the 1/8th round of the CAF Champions (CL) League, to determine the eight clubs for the group phase.

The eight surviving clubs from the CC are Esperance (Tunisia), Stade Gabesien (Tunisia), FUS Rabat (Morocco), Misr Makkassa (Egypt), Esperanca (Angola), CF Mounana (Gabon), Kawkab (Morocco) and Medeama (Ghana).

TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia), El Merreikh (Sudan), Stade Malien (Mali), MO Bejaia (Algeria), Ahli Tripoli (Libya), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) and Yanga make up the eight losers from the 1/8th round of the CL.

According to the procedure for the draw, the 16 clubs were ranked based on their performances at the group stage of the continental club championship for the last five years, 2011-2015.

Yanga were knocked out of the CAF Champions League’s second round by Al Ahly of Egypt, in which the two teams drew 1-1 in the first leg match at the National Stadium on April 9.

The return leg game, played in Alexandria on Wednesday, saw Yanga suffer a 2-1 loss to Egyptian side which eventually progressed to the groups’ stage of the CAF Champions League.

Yanga had cruised to the second round of the tournament after knocking out Cercle de Joachim of Seychelles and Rwanda’s APR in the first and second rounds, respectively.
