Tied on 39 points with holders Yanga at the end of the first half of the season, Azam secured a rare permission to travel to Ndola and feature in a competition that was not included in the calendar of the Tanzania Football Federation, TFF. The ice-cream makers had a good reason to travel and feature in the low-profile tourney, but their absence has left a gap of two matches that have been pushed back. Azam claimed the tournament in Ndola would be useful for them to gear up for the CAF Confederation Cup.
The reason for complaints particularly for the pacemakers and holders Yanga is that Azam will have an advantage and plan ahead how best to earn points while monitoring speed of other contenders.
However, this will bank heavily on how Yanga and Simba perform in their matches. Very possible these complaints might not surface in the event Yanga and Simba maintain unbeaten run in their subsequent league matches.
On the other side of the coin, Simba and Yanga who are hot contenders for the title will be tight-lipped should Azam lose ground through defeats in their matches.
Azam who were expected to arruve in Dar es Salaam yesterday, have their two matches; one against Tanzania Prisons and the other versus Stand United pushed back as a result of the trip to Ndola.
Unbeaten in 15 matches, Azam remains the only side to enjoy this rare feat that other teams in the league are missing. Premeirship teams are supposed to play their matches with absolute parrarel and equality in fixtures.
Simba have three points to cover and tally with Yanga after playing equal number of matches ahead of yesterday’s midweek fixtures.
Should Yanga or Simba drop any amount of points through draws or defeat, then the Tanzania Premier League Board and the football federation will have to be prepared for barrage of complaints over unfavourable fixtures.
Inequality of the number of matches for teams featuring in the league should only be tolerated for hardly a week but extending close to a month would certainly brew trouble.
The premiership title is still wide open but grounds for complaints will possibly be based on accrued advantage to earn points by one team and likelyhood of match-fixing allegations.
