Dar artists should make full use of ZNZ International Film Festival

EFFORTS to promote visual art in Tanzania and the rest of the East African region has received a tremendous boost as Dar es Salaam-based Nafasi Art Space is expected to hold an exhibition dubbed About Time in Zanzibar from July 14 to 17.

Artworks by several artists including James Muriuki (Kenya), Eric Mukalazi (Uganda), Amil Shivji, Rehema Chachage and Nicholas Calvin (Tanzania mainland), Farouque Abdella and Shams Bhanji (Zanzibar) will be showcased.

Henna Ladies who will, as well, be among the exhibition’s participants, will be doing some live painting, all based on the concept of time.

The exhibition, which is curated by Chachage and Rebecca Corey, will also see the participating artists and the rest of visual arts enthusiasts take part in tours from the event’s opening day to the closing day.

The exhibition will take place alongside the annual Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), which is dedicated to celebrate creativity in film making by both domestic and foreign film makers.

We would like to congratulate Nafasi Art Space for a bold move gearing towards giving domestic visual artists opportunity to showcase their creativity and bolster chances to enjoy prosperity in the profession.

We insist on the need for the domestic visual artists that will participate in the exhibition to make full use of the opportunity considering it is an important platform for developing the profession.

With the ZIFF attracting people from both in and outside the country,About Time exhibition’s participants stand to win the hearts of visual arts enthusiasts, who will forgeconnections that will turn out to be beneficial for the former.

Nafasi Arts Space should keep on holding exhibitions during the ZIFF apart from increasing the number of domestic visual artists in the events with a view to opening the door to success for the latter.

We also call on Tanzanians to attend both ZIFF and About Time exhibition in big number and celebrate artworks by the exhibition’s participants.

The presence of more visual arts enthusiasts in the exhibition will obviously go a long way in motivating the artists and the latter will, in turn, seek to improve their creativity andmake their artworks more appealing.

Domestic visual artists have for years been complaining of little interest by the majority of Tanzanians in either attending art exhibitions by the former or buying artworks produced by the artists.

We believe domestic visual arts enthusiasts have every reason to attend both ZIFF and About Time exhibition in big number given there is plenty to learn from the events, which will be conveying different messages on issues the former encounter.

We request ZIFF organizers to give the rest of arts centres in the country opportunity to hold exhibitions alongside the festivals in future in a bid to ensure more domestic visual artists get the much needed exposure.

Future exhibitions should, moreover, put more emphasis on giving more up-and-coming visual artists chance to showcase their artworks given the opportunity will be a useful learning experience for the latter.

The About Time exhibition’s participants should make the most of the event to entice new attendants into developing interest in artworks by domestic visual artists and eventually attend the former’s other exhibitions on regular basis.

It is our hope the About Time exhibition will turn out to be a fruitful venture by domestic visual artists in particular and the latter should make the most of the experience they will get in the event.
