Richard Kiza, CEO for the Ngorongoro Conservation Areas Authority (NCAA) said while presenting a three-year report from 2021 to the start of 2024 at a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday on relocation trends in the zone.
The families relocated to Msomera village in Handeni district and Saunyi village in Kilindi district both in Tanga region as well as Kitwa B village in Simanjiro district in Manyara region.
Relocating families were each compensated with a 2.5 acre of land and 10m/- inducement cash for those moving to Tanga and Manyara regions, while those moving to places of their choice are paid 15m/- to offset some costs, he said, elaborating that nearly 150 households were registering for relocation each week.
A total of 551 households with 3,010 family members plus 15,521 livestock were relocated to Msomera village as of January 2023 when the first phase of relocation was accomplished, he said.
July 2023 saw the second relocation after 2,500 residential units were built in Msomera village, 1,000 units in Saunyi village and 1,500 units in Kitwa B village.
During 2020/2021 NCAA attracted 191,614 tourists, reaching 752,332 tourists during 2022/23, while conservation authorities there project that tourist arrivals will rise to one million for 2023/24.
By late December NCAA had received 534,065 tourists, ten percent higher than visitors for the first half of 2022/23, he said, pointing at record revenues, reaching 171bn/- in 2022/23 from 31bn/- in 2020/21.
NCAA projected 200bn/- revenues for this financial year and at the end of the first half it had collected 123bn/-, he stated, affirming that this is an increase of
12 percent from fiscal 2022/23 first half.
In restoring the tourism sector after the Covid-19 stoppage the government had extended 6.6bn/- to the NCAA to fund various projects, with 69bn/- disbursed for gardening construction covering 29.5kilometers from the NCAA main entrance to Seneto, he specified.
NCAA plans to build 83 kms connecting Lodoare gate, the NCAA main entrance and Golini in the Serengeti National Park, he asserted, highlighting that Treasury has disbursed 25bn/- arising from the visit to China by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
The cash from November 2022 has been allocated to improving the Ngorongoro Lengai UNESCO Geopark and a museum block to be constructed at Lodoare.
NCAA has during the past three years managed to control elephant poaching, reducing incidents from 25 in one year to one such incident last year while arresting 175 poaching suspects, he explained.
Land use survey and planning is being conducted for 36 villages covering 2,500 square kms bordering the Pololeti game reserve area, he said.
Established under the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) Act Cap 413 in 1959 by splitting the Serengeti National Park, it covers an area of 8,292 sq. kms, where at that time it had a population of nearly 8,000 people.
From 261,000 livestock at the time, up to the 2022 census the area harboured over 100,000 people holding 850,000 head of livestock, thus the relocation plans, he added.
