Yanga and Azam have featured several times in the continental berth, but so far they have nothing to show for it. The same pair competed in last year’s CAF leagues but fired blanks after kissing the competitions goodbye at the early stages.
The two teams have no reason to lose ground in this year’s tournaments as they have everything at their disposal to carry them towards to a podium finish. Both Yanga and Azam have at their midst a galore of foreign players who are capable of spearheading serious title campaigns, enough to freeze any team coming their way.
The clubs had all the time in the world to select players of their choice ahead of the new seasons for both domestic and continental competitions. Beside competent players, the duo have potential sponsors as well as supporters who enable them to choose and sign a coach of their choice, in terms of competence and experience.
After spending colossal amounts of money to recruit players and coaches, there is no room for complaints with regard to their degree of competencies.
Having dominated the domestic football league for long spells to stay as hottest contenders for the premiership title, these teams have no reason not to stamp their authority in the CAF leagues where they play a fewer number of matches.
It has been a long since Tanzanian soccer clubs were a force to reckon with in continental football. Frequent and endless knockouts from the tournaments at early stages have demoralised football fans, some of whom have been forced to shift their support to other teams outside our territorial borders.
Tanzanians should be proud of throwing all of their support behind a team they know better. This is the time to do so. The last time a Tanzanian football club managed to reach the lucrative CAF Champions League’s Last-Eight stage was way back in 2003 when Simba represented the country. Over one decade now, Simba, Yanga and recently Azam have been performing poorly, crashing out of the elite continental competitions at early stages.
As Yanga and Azam gear up for the CAF leagues, they must prove their worth through solid and impressive performances to dictate terms all the way to the final. The heavy investment in the teams made by the management of both clubs must now bear fruits in the form of good results.
Although the standard of football in Tanzania is still below satisfactory levels, these two clubs that are featuring in CAF leagues have imported players with remarkable skills, over half of whom are dominating first-choice line-ups.
Officials, coaches and players know what it takes for a team to get good results, particularly in the CAF leagues. We hope this time we will not hear lame excuses as a result of either of the two giants being floored early in the tournament. Victory is the way forward.

Yanga, Azam have every reason to sparkle in CAF competitions this year
TANZANIA’s representatives in this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) leagues, Young Africans and Azam FC must sparkle at the continental soccer platform to ensure they make the country proud.
