Wanted: Police, citizenry collaboration to fight crime

Last Saturday President John Magufuli had ordered the police force’s top brass to grapple with the rise in crime across the country, failure of which he said would be forced to put them in the frontline in battling criminals.

He further demanded from them the highest degree of efficiency and delivery to restore the image of the police force and to rebuild trust in their ability to fight crime. The President issued the directives at the launch of the Community Safety Initiative Programme.

On the very same security forces in Dar es Salaam managed to eliminate at least two local bandits believed to have been involved in a recent wave of brutal machete murders across the country and seized various weapons including a hand grenade in the process.

.
The president went even further saying: “If you will stand firm, our country will be safe and peaceful”. He cited the example of neighbouring Rwanda where one can dare leave his or her property along the road and come to find it lying there intact the next day.

The president was especially concerned by the fact that bandits had even dared to invade police stations, kill officers on duty and escape with weapons. We wholeheartedly applaud the police force for a job well done and as good citizenry we pledge to look for ways to support the police by reporting crimes.

We also hail the police force for a job well done to combat crime cross the country and at the same time call on the people’s collaboration in availing any kind of information on crime.

According to police the programme is going to be rolled out to other districts and other parts of the country in the next three years and implemented based on detective policing, service delivery, effective communication and identifying more sources of income.

The construction has begun with the Kinondoni Police Region which has the highest crime zone. The mobile stations will be fully fledged like any conventional police station. They will fast get to the scene of crime or incident since they will be proactive.

Some international police experts speak of mobile police vans that stop at locations for an hour in each visit, enabling residents to drop by and speak to the OCS about any security concerns or other local issues.

They also say that it is the way for the residents in areas to be visited to update the mobile police station with pertaining security situations.

According to the Home ministry logistics show that at certain times some areas become densely populated with no police station in the vicinity, the police officers, who will be fully equipped in their mobile stations, will be moving with events and time given the history of crime in that area. All in all, the programme was aimed at improving the safety and security of the people and property in the country.
