Athletes must learn from Rio Olympics

THE Rio Olympics is eventually underway in the Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro as athletes from all over the world are competing for medals including Tanzanians.

Besides winning medals, the Games are staged every after four years with a view of strengthening cohesion, relationship, interaction and utmost, peace across the world.

Tanzania has been fielding its athletes in the Games ever since it gained independence but the bottom line here is an increasing wave of poor performance.

Contrary to our neighbours Kenya and to some extent Uganda, team Tanzania has always been a failure in this global event and it seems we have run short of ideas on how best to disengage from this endless episode.

We have the authorities that are linked to resolve this undesirable situation but it seems they are in disarray as well.

Medal collection cabinet for Tanzania is still yawning with paltry two of them dangling therein since the Moscow Olympics. This mediocre performance is happening every time our athletes board flights to Olympic venues across the world.

Runners, boxers, ping-pong team and of late, the judokas and swimmers characterise sports discipline of the team Tanzania in modern era Olympics.
However, it is important to learn and then establish mechanism that can support our best solution towards Olympic medal scarcity for our country.

Very sure team Kenya is not in Rio for nothing, those athletes are likely to return home victorious. For team Tanzania, it remains as a huge question of uncertainty though we still give our athletes the benefit of doubt that they have a chance to win at least a medal.

What members of team Tanzania should do in Brazil is not only to concentrate in winning medals, but also how other medal winners have been preparing ahead of the shows. Here comes the question of interaction where our athletes have to get at least a leaf from their counterparts who are inside the Olympic village.

Asking questions and entertain with them is the way forward to pick some lessons that might in the future help them to attain the success they have been missing for decades.

Besides the athletes, those coaches and officials who are in Rio should also take their time in interaction to learn how best teams can be prepared and the level of organisation to build up a formidable team as well.

This is the time Tanzania Olympic Committee should make use to work on how other committees of other countries organise their teams to hit success levels.

TOC officials should not limit their visit in Rio on attending meetings and conferences, but should also inspire our athletes, interact with Olympic committees then come back home with something tangible to transform team Tanzania.

We wish all the best our team Tanzania in the global Games and flap our flag high to restore our glory at this platform. All the best, where there is a will, there is a way.
