- and the Cask in Mwanza, for allegedly causing noise which is a violation of law number 20 of the 2004 Environment Management Act and the 2015 Environmental (Biosafety) (amendment) regulations. Speaking during a meeting with environmental stakeholders in Dar es Salaam, NEMC Executive Director, Dr Samuel Gwamaka has said that the law states that businesses operating in residential areas should not exceed 60 DBA during the daytime and 40 DBA during the night, highlighting that the bars were initially warned.
“Some paid fines but they still proceeded to violate the regulations. We have closed down 19 bars in Kinondoni, 25 in Ilala, 22 in Kigamboni, 12 in Temeke, 5 and 6 in Mwanza,” said Dr Samuel Gwamaka.
“For the notorious operators, we have been dealing with them but they are still causing us problems, the likes of Boardroom in Kinondoni district, Wavuvi camp, Warehous, Kitambaa Cheupe, Elements, Soweto, Liquid; in Dodoma, we have Chako ni Chako, Rainbow, Gentleman,; and in Mwanza, we have Kasiki.”
“We have closed these bars because they proved to be notorious enough to continue violating regulations despite the fact that we had already warned them. After taking action, some of the owners have approached us to plead for a pardon and to have the bars reopened,” added Gwamaka.
