NATURAL gas discovered by M&P Exploration Production Tanzania Limited in Mkuranga in 2012 has more impurities hence the company is looking for ways to make it commercially viable.
M&PEP deputy Chief Executive Officer, Elias Kilembe said recently that the Mkuranga natural gas well remains idle as the company considers options on how to handle it as it has some carbon component.
The students and their lecturers who were on a familiarization tour of the company’s Mnazi bay facility, wanted to know reasons behind the abandonment of Mkuranga gas well.
“We have not abandoned the well, we are seeking a solution to its gas which has more impurities, meanwhile, we are concentrating on Mnazi bay where all our four wells are in operation,” Kilembe noted.
He pointed out that the Mnazi bay gas facility which the company commands 60 percent stake while Wentworth Resources and Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation share the remainder, has sweet gas which is sold to TPDC and Tanesco for power generation.
M&P Exploration Production (T) Ltd which is a subsidiary of Paris based Maurel & Prom was allocated Bigwa-Rufiji/Mafia exploration block with a size of 12,025 square kilometres in 2005.
By 2007, the company successfully discovered over 20 million standard cubic feet of gas in 2007.The Mkuranga well was spudded back in 2006 and drilled to a depth of 3,622 meters within the lower cretaceous sandstone reservoirs by January 3, 2007. The gas was encountered at a depth of 2,030m.
Kilembe said M&P bought a controlling stake from Wentworth Resources in 2012 to officially take over operations at Mnazi Bay which is a 756 sq km block.
“The Mnazi Bay production sharing contract has been signed by Artumas, TPDC and the Ministry of Energy and Minerals on May, the 18th 2004. Maurel & Prom farmed‐in on September, the 18th 2009,” the French company said in a statement.
