Motorists brace for surge in fuel prices

THE Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has announced higher price caps for petroleum products, effective yesterday, bringing more pain for motorists.

Dr James Andilile, Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) director general

Dr James Andilile, the director general, said in a statement that in March, fuel retail prices in Dar es Salaam region are set at 3,163/- per litre for petrol, 3,126/- for diesel and 2,840/- for kerosene.

The changes arise from an increase in the prices of refined oil in the global market as delivered to shipping agencies, by an average of 4.5 percent for petrol and 1.99 percent for diesel.

There are also rising import costs (premiums) at the Dar es Salaam port by an average of 15.38 percent for petrol and 40.41 percent for diesel, with Mtwara port raising premiums by an average of 7.61 percent for both types of fuel.

The changes in fuel prices are influenced by increased use of the euro in paying for imported oil, he specified.

Price caps for petroleum products for the previous month, taking effect on February 7, were 3,051/- per litre for petrol, 3,029/- for diesel and 2,840/- for kerosene in Dar es Salaam.

In other regions, like the northern safari capital of Arusha, a litre of petrol retailed at 3,247/-, diesel at 3,211/-, and kerosene at 2,924/-.

The EWURA report has it that motorists in Dodoma will fork out 3,222/- for a litre of petrol, 3,185/- for diesel, and 2,899/- for a litre of kerosene.
