The Jangwani Street side is expected to depend on Zimbabwean duo Donald Ngoma and Thamani Kamusoko along with Amissi Tambwe of Burundi who have harmonized well in the team’s previous Champions League matches.
Ngoma scored when Yanga eliminated Cercle de Joachim of Mauritius on a 3-0 aggregate in the preliminary round before scoring again in their first round match against APR of Rwanda, coordinating well with Kamusoko and Tambwe.
Yanga will need to win today to be well positioned when they meet in the return leg match on April 19 in Cairo.
The match billed to be thrilling will also see Dutch coaches, Hans van der Pluijm of Yanga and his well known compatriot Martin Cornelis Jol of Al Ahly, testing each other’s wits.
The Egyptian side will depend on their regular strikers like Malick Evouna, Emad Moteab and Amr Gamal to outclass the home side. However, the Al Ahly manager is said to have reserved some of his players for the return leg tie.
Some of the players retained for the return leg are defender Mohamed Naguib, midfielder Saleh Gomaa, striker Ahmed Hamdy and left-back Hussein El-Sayed.
Al Ahly made it to the round of 16 after defeating Recreativo do Libolo of Angola 2-0 on aggregate while Yanga went through after beating Rwanda’s APR FC 3-2 on aggregate.
The Red Devils have previously defeated the Mainland champions on penalties in 2014 as the game ended 1–1 on aggregate and Ahly won the penalty shoot-out to advance to the CAF Champions League round of 16.
Each team won 1-0 at home.
