Tanzania women's cricket team tipped to excel in 2023 Victoria Series

TANZANIA Cricket Association (TCA) has expressed confidence over senior national women's team chances to hold sway in the 2023 Victoria Women's Twenty20 International Series which got underway in Uganda on Tuesday.

The association's information officer, Atif Salim, disclosed in Dar es Salaam yesterday the cricketers had intensive training to shape up for the showdown.

The official noted: "We have high hopes for our girls as they trained hard last month and had a good Bilateral Series in which they played competitive cricket."

Tanga hosted the TCA-organized National Women's Bilateral Series at Annadil Burhani ground and Usagara ground recently, with Morogoro women's squad ending as the champion.

Salim revealed: "The last tournament we took part in, which was the Quadrangular Women's T20 Series in Kenya in December last year was a disappointing one as we could not even make it to the final."

Cricket Kenya (CK) organized the tournament which took place in Nairobi and was won by Uganda, beating Kenya in the final.

The TCA information officer noted: "That was a good wake-up call for the national team that was fresh from winning the Kwibuka Women’s T20 International tournament held in Kigali a few months earlier."

Tanzania women's cricket team beat the rest of the participants to lift the 2022 Kwibuka Women's T20 International Tournament, garnering victory in seven matches it played.

Brazil, Botswana, Germany, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, and hosts Rwanda are the other squads that battled it out in the showdown.

According to Salim, the Tanzania women's cricketers have learned from their mistakes and cannot get complacent as they have seen improvement shown by East African neighbours, including Rwanda, whose U-19 girls' team played in the 2023 ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup that took place in South Africa.

Salim insisted: "We have a new opponent to face in the UAE who poses a different challenge altogether and it is going to be a very highly competitive tournament this time around."

The 2023 Victoria Women's Twenty20 International Series was launched on Monday, with all participating teams' skippers taking part in the opening occasion.

The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA)-organized showdown has brought together women's national squads from the United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and hosts Uganda seeking to raise the standard of the women's sport.
