The duo yesterday conducted cleaning at the hospital’s maternity ward floors, as part of their second day of their community service at the facility.
According to the hospital’s Environmental Health officer, Miriam Mongi, the two former ministers showed their cooperation during the cleaning exercise and that they were willing to attend to their duties as assigned by the court.
“They are doing as they are directed and we expect that they will continue to cooperate with us until they finish their duty as assigned by the court,” said Mongi.
The hospital official further said the duo will today carry out further cleaning at the Out-Patient Department (OPD) ward located adjacent to the administration block.
Mongi added that the former top government officials wouldl clean up all windows at the OPD ward building which has 19 rooms.
“As per the cleaning schedule at the hospital, the duo will on Friday cut down grass within the facility from early in the morning,” she detailed.
“They are conducting the cleaning under the close supervision of the hospital’s Environmental Health officer who is in charge of ensuring the hygiene exercise is carried out to satisfaction,” said hospital health officer, adding that he was overseeing the hygiene exercise because hospital cleaning needed much attention than in other areas.
“If we are not satisfied with their cleaning, we are mandated to order them to repeat the cleaning,” Mongi explained.
On Monday, this week, the two former cabinet ministers were given brooms and other cleaning tools to begin their community service as punishment for abuse of public office, marking a new milestone in their gradual fall from grace.
The duo, who was convicted last year of irregularly handling a gold auditing contract for the government were allowed out of jail on a Kisutu resident magistrate’s court order last week and will spend the remainder of their sentence, which ends on November 5, this year, doing community service at the hospital.
They will swap the comfort of their homes for four hours a day, from Monday to Friday, for the task.
The court decision was based on recommendations from the Prisons Department that the ex-ministers’ jail time be substituted with community service.
