Mjema made the remarks yesterday in Dar es Salaam at a ceremony to hand over computers, a printer, a 5,000-litre water tank, seven rehabilitated classrooms and exercise books at Kibugumo Primary School at Kigamboni, Temeke District.
The handing over of the items worth 20m/- went along with free medical checkups for under five children provided Bango Sangho, Bango Sangho is an association of Bengalis of Indian origin residing in Dar es Salaam.
The district commissioner said it was facing a lot of problems in the education sector that needed creativity to solve them.
“Our district is in great need of 2,891 classrooms and 28,000 desks...you are required to be very creative in addressing some of the challenges facing the education sector,” said Mjema.
Moreover, Mjema urged citizens to create a behaviour of conducting medical checkups at least once a year in order to ensure good health.
She assured Bango Sangho that the support they provided would be used properly.
For his part, Bango Sangho chairman Kunal Banerjee said they decided to direct their support to the school after realising the importance of health and education for the current and future development of the nation.
He said they have provided aid to the school, which focussed on health and school equipment, for a third consecutive year.
“We want to see the education status of the country changing.
Earlier, we donated 100 desks as well as built two classrooms,” said Banerjee.
Health consultant, Dr Ali Mzige, said through medical screening for over 400 under fives, they will be able to identify diseases affecting the children as well as provide health education to parents.
Malnutrition, and especially stunting, is one of the silent crises faced by children in Tanzania and lack of education is amongst the causes for the problem.
“This is why we decided to conduct free checkups for children and provide nutrition education for parents,” he said.
He added that children who would be diagnosed with serious problems will be offered referral services at Temeke hospital.
