Samia to grace 17th Manufacturer of the Year Awards, CTI executive

PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is on Sunday expected to grace the Presidential Manufacture of the Year Awards (PMAYA), which has been organised by the Confederation of Industrialists (CTI).

The annual event is to involve various industrialists in the country who compete through various established sectors.

Leodegar Tenga, CTI executive director, unveiled yesterday in Dar es Salaam when speaking to journalists ahead of the event.

Tenga said that the annual event will involve various government leaders, big businesspeople and representatives of various international organisations.

“CTI is very grateful President Samia has agreed to attend this important event and that her presence will boost the morale of businesspersons and industrialists as well in order to increase the quality of their products,” he said.

“This is a great honour for CTI and the industrialists in the country,” Tenga said, adding that the awards which were given for the first time in 2005 aim to recognise the contribution of industrialists to the economic growth in the country and increase the quality of products.

He said the winners will be selected from the various sectors after extensive evaluation.

He said the awards aim to increase sales of goods and services abroad, increase competition in the industrial sector, increase research and development in the industrial sector in the country.

"We thank all the sponsors for their support because without them the event cannot be held, we are very grateful to the main sponsor of this year's awards which is NBC Bank," he said.

Tenga named other sponsors of the awards event as EXIM Bank, Motison Group, TCC, TBL, Stamico, Total Energies, Kilimanjaro Cables, Alaf Limited, Bonite Bottlers, SBC, Serengeti Breweries Mati Super Brand and Elsewedy Electric East Africa.

He said the awards have greatly helped industrialists to continue improving the products they produce and he urged them to make sure they produce products that will compete in the local and international markets.

"In order for Tanzania to achieve its dream of becoming an industrial nation, the industrialists must produce in large quantities and the products must be of good quality to compete in the international markets to earn foreign currency," said Tenga.

He said the competition has been improving throughout the years and one major improvement is the increase in the number of categories of winners from five economic sub sectors when the competition started 17 years ago to 22 economic sub sectors at the moment.

He said another improvement is involvement of the large, medium and small size businesses with an equal chance of winning in the competition.

Tenga said the sub sectors have also been realigned to better represent the industry activities of the members of the confederation which includes separation of nonalcoholic beverages from alcoholic products.

The CTI official said participants of the competition will initially be classified in accordance with their economic sub sectors and then based on their industrial sizes.

He said participant entities will be grouped in sub-sectors of beverages, building, construction and real estate, chemical and chemical products, minerals and related products, energy and renewable energy, electrical, electronics, machinery and equipment.

He mentioned other sub sectors as finance and insurance services, food processing, hospitality and related services, consultancy and training services, leather products and footwear, metal and metal products.

Other sub sectors according to Leodegar Tenga include motor vehicles and accessories, paper and paper products, printing and publishing, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, plastic and rubber products.

He mentioned others as textiles and apparels, timber, wood products and furniture, transport and warehousing, Information and Communication Technologies.
