Magomeni is one of the schools in Mtwara which were affected by flash floods that hit the area hard last year.
Stanbic Bank has extended support to the school, a move which is in line with the financial institution’s renewed focus on education in the southern region of Tanzania.
The move to reconstruct two classrooms and the headmaster’s office came after a call for assistance following massive floods that hit Mtwara area last year.
Apart from rebuilding classrooms, the bank also managed to construct a teacher’s staff office. The entire project is said to have cost over 50m/-.
“Although we were originally asked to provide foodstuff following floods, we felt we could do something that would have a lasting effect on the community,” said Desideria Mwegelo, who is the bank’s head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs.
In addition to rebuilding the structure from ground up, the official said: “The bank will also install electricity and buy desks for the students, some of whom are currently studying under trees.”
Staff from the bank have also joined the it’s efforts and held a fundraising drive to buy uniforms for about 700 students.
The need for new uniforms was spotted during a recent visit to the school to check on the progress of the reconstruction, which has provided employment to a number of locals in the area.
The bank expects to handover the building in March.
