The VTS, is an advanced digital system designed to monitor and manage motor vehicles in the country. This innovative solution provides real-time tracking capabilities, ensuring that transportation services meet the standards and regulations set by the government.
Deputy Minister for Transport David Kihenzile made the instruction on Monday in Dar es Salaam when he toured LATRA's offices.
He wanted the authority to act effectively on the dishonest people who are trying to ruin the good initiatives of the government.
Kihenzile said that the system which has been installed in more than 9,700 upcountry passenger buses has capacity to conduct 19 works including track vehicles, record the driving habits, issues status reports and alerts when incidents or other events, but there are some dishonest people especially drivers, were playing the systems in order to violate set laws.
According to him, the efficiency of the VTS is one of the reasons which pushed the government to allow 24 hours travel as it is able to monitor well transport even when traffic police are not on the road.
The minister however acknowledged that there is a need to improve and expand the VTS to all motor vehicles including private cars and government owned vehicles in order to strengthen monitoring to curb accidents.
LATRA board chair, Prof Ahmed Mohammed Ame asked the ministry to think on the possibility of allowing installation of the VTS to other vehicles than only in commercial upcountry buses.
“Despite some challenges, the system has proved that it is capable to monitor operations in buses and avert accidents, we have been taking measures to fight who temper with the system and we will continue heightening efforts to ensure that it is well utilised by all bus operators,” he explained.
He said that when the system was given chance to operate at least 80 percent of its work, it performed well and productively in reducing accidents and deaths.
He said that if the system will be installed in all motor vehicles allowing LATRA to monitor operations of all vehicles including private and government ones, will greeted help to control bad behaviours on the roads including speeding while helping to curb accidents.
He said it was high time now the system be improved and expanded to work in all vehicles in the country which also need to in line with the improvement of laws.
According to him, by installing the Vehicle Tracking System, LATRA, police and owners are be able to locate the location of the vehicle and its speed across the country.
He also reminded bus owners and drivers that the VTS system has the ability to provide a clear report to the authority if it is tampered with or damaged.
