Dodoma city residents decry high sugar prices

SOME residents of Dodoma have lamented over the rise in prices of sugar, calling for government intervention on the value of the commodity as one kilogramme of the sweetener has risen up to 4,000/-.

The residents have also called for a quick solution to the situation which they said is causing other commodities to rise as it is an important ingredient.

One of the residents, Saida Kessy, told this paper that they are surprised to see that sugar prices have risen from the usual price of 3,000/- to 4,000/- within a short period of time, which threatens to raise prices of other commodities.

"We ask the government to intervene because sugar is a very important ingredient that is used a lot in our families, so this price increase is a big blow to low-income citizens,” she said.

Mariam Ally, a food trader in the city, said she used to buy one kilogramme of sugar for 3,000/- but today she was sold for 3,500/- which is a loss for her business.

"I am a food vendor, and sugar is an important ingredient which I must use daily, now the increase in the price of this product is threatening my business, which I rely on to run my family," she said.

Likewise, she said she is asking the government through the relevant authorities to address the matter in order to rescue small scale businesses who rely on sugar for processing of their products for sale.
