Total West Solution director Alex Mbaga told The Guardian yesterday that Tandale market waste has been lying uncollected for more than three weeks, causing the roads leading to the market impassable by users.
“Despite being owing by the municipal council such a huge amount, we still come to collect refuse to heed the government directive to prevent the spread of cholera in the city,” he said.
Tandale market, which is located in the densely populated area of the municipality, produces heaps and heaps of waste daily, sometimes making it hard for refuse collection firms.
“This trash has been here for more than three weeks. We collect it twice everyday, but we have not yet finished as the capacity of our vehicles is 26-30 tonnes if we compress it,” he said, adding:
“We came here to collect the garbage but the municipality has ordered us to stop for almost three days now.”.
He said that the company is facing many challenges but the most is payment whereby the municipal usual delay paying us.
Despite late payment from the municipal, we still continue with the daily work.
He added that apart from Tandale Market, they also provide the same service at different areas within Kinondoni Municipal such as, Kawe Market, Mwananyamala hospital and other areas.
Mbaga said that they have asked the muinicipal to provide service to the citizens who lives near the market area because most of them are using the service by throwing trash in the area and cause a lot of garbage.
“We are facing a lot of challenges in this area; some trashes are coming from the society.
The chairman of the market Mohamed Mwenkya argue the government to put more effort to brought the car regularly so that the market will be clean and avoid getting Chlorella
He said the market consisted of 1250 businesses, but their job was to collect money and pay the workers, but the hiring of dump trucks was the municipal council’s because the market is the property of Kinondoni municipality.
“If the refuse truck came here regularly we wouldn’t have this problem, but if it comes once for more than weeks then the problem gets worse like it is now,” said Mwenkya
He added that they had guards at dumpsites, but many people go there in the mid of the night to dump their trash.
