Acting Chairman of the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania (CBT), Mudhihir Mudhihir disclosed this over the weekend while addressing growers in Masasi District, Mtwara Region during a meeting to promote farming of the crop.
He urged farmers who would be given the tree seedlings to adopt best agronomic practices of the cashew crop for best returns.
Mudhihir stated that the best approach to develop cashew nuts’ farming is through adopting the best agronomic practices—planting better and improved seedlings.
“Planting improved seedlings is the main secret behind success in this farming, the idea is to remove old trees and replace them with new and betters seedlings” he added.
Mudhihir said the program that encourages farmers to venture into planting new cashew nuts’ seedlings is being spearheaded by the cashew nuts’ fund in collaboration with the district council and will be distributed to wards and villages.
The CBT chairman urged farmers to follow better spacing and other better agronomical practices.
He said in the good old days Masasi was among the leading districts for producing cashew nuts, but now production has gone down mostly due to the aging of existing cashew nuts trees.
“So there is every reason to plant new seedlings to promote the crop,” he added.
Out of the 43 districts which are to benefit with the program of planting new cashew nuts’ seedlings include Masasi, Tandahimba, Newala and Nanyumbu.
In addition, Mudhihir also used the platform to advise cashew nuts growers to plant leguminous crops in the fields of cashew seedlings to eradicate hunger and poverty.
Masasi District Council Officer, Kamaghe Anania said the district council has received between 7,000 and 4,000 improved seedlings.
