Les Wanyika: Unending confusion of ‘who is who’ in ‘Kasuku’ lyrics

WHEN musicians recount a real life story it is usually easy to recognize the character line up and who plays what role, but at times they decide to set up a weird scenario where it is unclear who is who.

Yet even in that sort of situation the motif of the lyrics, the moral they are providing is distinct and clear, it is repeated over and over again as in the Les Wanyika song that is remembered by the principal character, Kasuku, while a relation, conjugal affinity, swears he or she will remain by him or her, and explains why.

This explanation is the motif of the song, in the sense of being steadfast in conjugal affinity with someone who is essentially satisfied with what he or she gets in life, and does not trouble himself or herself for things that are above his or her head.

That does not mean he is not struggling to move forward but that this is not at the centre of his concerns but to do with what he or she has, holding the future in hope rather than in anguish about the present.

It is someone who exudes confidence in what he has in life, not sad, distant.

One way to clear the fog as to who is the principal character is the name, and the Les Wanyika artistes were good at their puzzle setting business, as it depends on whether the name they gave is the first name of their character or the last name.
