271 Tanzanian journalists mistreated - says report

A Total of 271 Tanzanian journalists have been reported to have been mistreated while at work and 94 media outlets have been ill-treated over the past 10 years, while important institutions are also involved.

 

Victor Maleko, Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC)’s programme Officer, training, research and publications said on Tuesday when presenting a report during the debate on the journalists protection and safety before members of Manyara Press Club (MNRPC) and police force in the region.

The debate aimed at strengthening journalists’ and police force relations in better serving the community.

He said according to the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) data, out of 271 scribes who were mistreated, 219 were male journalists and 53 were female. Some of the abuses journalists faced include being arrested, beaten, their equipment being destroyed, captured, humiliated and killed.

Maleko mentioned the 10 leading regions for having sex events are Dar es Salaam, Shinyanga, Arusha, Dodoma, Mara, Kagera, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, Ruvuma and Singida.

He also stated that the number of incidents that happened every year where in 2013 there were 38 incidents, in 2014 (27), 2015 (20), 2016 (32), 2017 (5), 2018 (24), 2019 (40), 2020 (41), 2021 (26) and 2022 (18).

He explained that incidents of violence have been decreasing as a result of the dialogues.

Manyara Regional Police Commander, George Katabazi said writers should focus on providing education and condemning sexual violence, especially sexual violence against children.

Katabazi asked journalists in the region to shout about cruelty to children and citizens to take the law into their own hands.

He asked journalists to be patriotic and prioritize the national interests in order to build the nation.

Zacharia Mtigandi, MNRPC chairman urged scribes to adhere to ethics when executing their daily duties.
